In case you hadn’t heard, Bill Gates is the new Secretary of Defense. Oh, wait…different Gates. All I can say is “it’s about time.” In fact, it’s way past time. I don’t care how smart he is or how much the President loves him, Donald Rumsfield lost the confidence of the public and the military long ago. You’d have to conclude that the only reason this happened is because the Dems took Congress and Pres. Bush felt that he had to. As a lifelong Republican, I’m not excited about that development, but if that’s what it takes to wake people up… Sad.

I imagine that Rumsfeld's departure has been in the works for a while. In 2004, the word from Bush was that Rumsfeld would stick around at least until the next QDR was released (in 2005). At that point, it was too late to cut him loose without looking weak before the mid-terms.

Letting Rumsfeld join McNamara at the old secretaries home at this point lets Bush deflate some of the news coverage about losing both houses of congress. It's classic Rovian timing.

I am still trying to figure out why Bush was so adamant that he wanted Rummy to stay until the end of his term just before the election, but after the Democratic Wave he was singing a different tune...
