Exploiting Online Games

I had a fascinating discussion with Gary McGraw last week about his latest book Exploiting Online Games: Cheating Massively Distributed Systems. For the next two days I was telling everyone about it. The issues surrounding online game security are representative of the kinds of security issues that plague any large-scale distributed system. I heartily recommend the interview and the book to anyone who plays games or is just interested in the larger security picture.

you have no idea my disappointment at not seeing this video appear on the Reflections Projections 2007 video list, further aggravated by it being the only talk not available on http://www.acm.uiuc.edu/conference/2007/videos. I really wanted to see what he was saying, and perhaps it would have convinced me to buy the book.

When I hear him on se-radio, I thought Gary McGraw sounded like a snake-oil salesman -but he sounded a bit more genuine in this interview.

Two things came to mind:

1. I was surprised that trusted computing didn't come up. You can see why Microsoft feels they need it so badly. The viability of thick clients may depend on that ability to "crack off some state" and hand it to the user, without handing it to the user.

2. People who cackle away at their own jokes. What can you say? Hire them quick, perhaps. You can just hear the guy's brain playing.
