Java vs. C++
Java is preferable to C++ in exactly the same way that driving a 1994 Chevy Impala is preferable to driving a 1978 Ford LTD.
Update: Here’s some pictures to help you with the visualization.

That must mean that C# is a 2005 Cadillac CTS-V. ;-)

I guess that makes Python a Porsche from the 80s and Lisp a 1964 1/2 Mustang...

And I thought that Java was the SUV of programming languages: http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/philg/2003/09/20

When all you have is a 1978 Ford LTD, everything starts to look like roadkill.
Of course, you might as well be comparing cars instead of programming languages. You'll still get just as many opinions, battles of superiority, and snide remarks from German car owners.
The comparison of programming languages has got to be the technophile's way of starting a bar fight, in which, everyone claims victory, and yet, everyone also was beaten unconscious. We might as well just go back to discussing which is better, emacs or vi.
