Blistering Blister Packs

Dave Weinberger has a humorous look at the dangers or blister packs, which he refers to as “physical DRM.” He includes a list of things that are easier to open, including “an unripe, fused pistachio shell.” Wired had a piece on Tales from Packaging Hell a while back which is not nearly as entertaining.

Not that I don't enjoy seeing my kids eyes bug out when I pull out my knife, wire cutters, and tell everyone to stay out of the "blood line" (the area where my hands could reach with the knife and draw blood).

But I can't help but think this is an opportunity in disguise for online retailers. Since they ship everything direct, don't have the same shoplifting risk as brick-and-mortar stores, and also don't have the need to make it look picture perfect on the display shelf, they should arrange to sell "blister free" versions of the products. One where children could open the box themselves. If retailers like Amazon could make arrangements to have the same types of toys sold in easy to open boxes and sold exclusively online, that would be a STRONG motivator for me to consider purchasing all future birthday and Christmas presents online over retail stores, since it would make "present time, present time, open it up and see what's inside!" a lot more fun for my children.
