The Optical Disk is Dead
My recent travels had me wishing for a lighter bag—that implies a smaller laptop—or no laptop. I’m not ready for the latter, but I’d be happy to give up the optical drive on my laptop to get it. I never use it on the road. I’m willing to plug one in for the rare cases where I use it. I’m ready to jettison optical drives on all portable computers.

I certainly hope the rumors of an Apple ultralight turn out to be accurate. IBM and Toshiba used to offer the option to replace the useless optical drive in a laptop with an extra battery or hard drive. Unfortunately newer, thinner and more integrated laptops don't have room for this kind of modularity.
One ultra-lightweight configuration that I find quite effective is a Niko N800 with an Apple Bluetooth keyboard (and the N800 has 2 SD slots instead of the N810's annoying mini-SD, one of which is non-removable). I have yet to cross-compile jed (emacs clone) on mine, and gcc would not be available for it, but python is. It doesn't hurt that the combo costs less than $400, even when combined with a Waterfield Designs bag for the keyboard.

Cheers
