Tag Consensus
One of the problems with free form tags as a social categorizing mechanism is that different people will choose different tags for the same thing. Is the right tag for eGovernment e-government, egovernment, e-gov, egov, edemocracy, or what? The solution is to use blogs to drive consensus around tags. John Gotze is trying to do that with eGovernment. His proposal is egovernment. Works for me.

We need to get someone like technorati or w3c to come up with a list of std tags...

I tend to use "politics," but how about "government"? It may be just me, but I find that while there's a necessary distinction between things virtual and things real, the functions are the same. The ebusiness of egovernment is the same as the business of government. How long until we just drop the "e"?

I don't think standardized tags are the answer, there are just too many possibilities. Perhaps if applications that use tagged metadata utilitized some sort of suggestion functionality. Although I can see the limitations this method implies. Perhaps what we need is meta-metadata -- a folksonomy for the folksonomy, so to speak.

Politics, democracy and government are all very different things even thought they are intimately connected. If we're going that route we might as well add bureaucracy in there as well - since its the face of government that most people are familiar with.
I think it would be nice to move toward a more transparent view of government - at least in the electronic world. Information silos are the root of so many of governments problems and by continuing to categorize information by agency and department is only adding to the problem.
However, that leads back to the original question - is it 'egov', 'e-government or what. I do suppose that when tagging these concepts that we should be cognizant of the intended audience. While 'egov or G2C/G2B/G2G means a lot to me, it means nothing to a lot of people. So audience might be something to consider when coming up with these tags.
