Orrin Hatch's allegiance to Hollywood big media at the expense of industry in his own state is finally getting some exposure, and we have Steve Urquhart to thank.
Hatch was up for re-election when I was in college, and he held a Senate Field Hearing on campus on the topic of file-sharing. He invited Shawn Fanning of Napster and a host of local Utah companies that had built products on p2p file-sharing as part of the panel. Peter Breinholt, a local recording artist, was also present.
The hearing was extremely pro-p2p. Every panalist was in favor. The crowd cheered when Shawn Fanning demoed Napster, bringing up a long list of Peter Breinholt tracks available for free on the service. Breinholt thought this was fabalous too, giving him exposure that record labels couldn't.
Hatch was extremely pro-p2p, threatening that Congress may have to enact mandatory licensing legislation to get the record labels to allow companies like Napster to thrive.
And then he was re-elected.
And then he sponsored the DMCA.
And then he threatened to destroy the hard drives of anyone caught with illegal content from p2p networks.
If that isn't back-stabbing, I'm not sure what is.
I don't know a lot about Steve Urquhart, but I know more than enough about Senator Hatch.

There was a lot of discussion about Urquhart on the lists of some of the local lugs. I tried to get him to come and speak to UVLUG but haven't heard back from him. It’s kind of surprising, really. You'd think his campaign leaders would leap at the chance to get him on campus.

I'm sorry, it must have been Ashdown I contacted; he just got back to us this morning. But send the word to Urquhart that we'd love to have him too. :)
