Stupid Web Design Tricks

I found this list of 19 things not to do when building a Web site.

The first, DO NOT resize the user’s browser window, EVER resonated with me because I was reading a site last week that had some great information that I wanted to read, but every time I clicked on a link, my browser would blow up to full size. I finally gave up—it was just too annoying to go on.

I also liked number eight: If your website does not work in Firefox, welcome to 2007 DUMBASS. Even though on average, only 10% or so of users use Firefox, those users are influencers. Of course on some sites, the percentage is much higher. On Technometria, year to date, Firefox and IE users are dead even: 42.9% and 43.1% respectively.

I have to question any supposed web developer who ignored browser compatibility issues. That's been a checklist item since Microsoft started rolling IE3 into the OS. These days, you should still be checking against IE 6/7, Firefox and Safari at a bare minimum. It also doesn't hurt to check out Opera, Galleon and K-melleon as well as mobile browsers on Palm, Windows Mobile, Blackberry and Symbian. Does that sound like a lot of work? Maybe, except when you consider that an Intel-based Mac with Parallels and some mobile emulators can end up covering almost all of the aforementioned browsers without much trouble at all.

Damn that IE to hell, Damn them!

You should consider using Firefox's capability to disable window resizing - Tools >> Options >> Content >> click 'Advanced' (near enable Javascript) and uncheck the option "Move or resize existing windows".

Cheers,

Clint
