(Not) Scaling MySpace

Larry Dignan has a five-point analysis of MySpace's IT infrastructure and it's scaling issues over at Between the Lines. Very interesting. I know a little about MySpace before they were bought and this scaling issue doesn't surprise me. Read the Baseline article for the details. Bonus: I posted a piece on Tivo's walled garden and Tivoserver at BTL this morning.

TiVo and the iPod on OS X

Getting video from your TiVo to a iPod isn't as hard as it used to be. This hack shows how to do it all on the Mac and have it scheduled to run automatically.

EyeTV Hybrid for Macs

A week or so ago, I picked up one of these EyeTV hybrids, a little device that has a USB connector on one end and a cable connector on the other. Plug it into your computer, connect up the cable and you're watching TV. There's an online program guide so you can schedule recordings of upcoming shows--just like TiVo. The device works with the Apple remote that comes with the new iMacs, Minis, and MacBooks. The best part is that it can automatically takes things you record and put them on your iPod (or at least into iTunes, to

TiVo's Got Podcasts

This weekend, I noticed that my TiVo could play podcasts. I don't know how long that feature's been there, months probably, but I just found it. Unfortunately IT Conversations isn't on their pre-populated list, but there were some that I was interested in. For example I listened to the latest TWiT this morning while I was getting ready. Here's a few thoughts and observations: This is a no-brainer for TiVo. Lot's of free content that they can put on their box for little effort and garner a "new" feature. You can add podcasts not on TiVo's list, but you

DRM, TiVo, and the iPod

I put a little piece at Between the Lines on TiVo's announcement that they future versions of TiVoToGo will have support for creating iPod ready video. While you're there, check out David Berlind's article on Sony and DRM. Apparently Sony is rethinking DRM as a strategy. In related news, the rootkit and other CD DRM techniques can be defeated by scotch tape. Cool.

DRM Day

Today was DRM Day at Between the Lines. David Berlind posted three excellent stories that all had something to do with DRM: The DRM grinch who stole Christmas The day the broadcast died How to stop Hollywood and Congress from trampling on your constitutional rights In addition, I posted a personal story about DRM that claims that the DMCA (yes, I got it wrong at BTL and wrote DCMA) is more about protecting TiVo's (and other company's) business model than it is about protecting the rights of copyright holders. I was especially intrigued by the post on broadcast. What

Surfing Your Tivo

I'm probably just hopelessly behind, but in case you are too, I thought I'd post this. If your TiVo is networked (i.e. connected to your home LAN), but can surf the now playing list with a browser and download the shows. Just point your browser at https://your-tivo-ip-number/ The https is important. Otherwise, you end up looking at a do nothing splash page. You'll be asked to authenticate (HTTP authentication). Use tivo as the user name and your media access key (MAK) as the password. You can get the MAK from your Tivo under Setup. Once you download the program,
