Visa Isn't Centralized—and Neither Is First Person Identity

Visa isn't centralized. Instead, it's a trust framework that lets thousands of participants interoperate. First-person identity brings that same model to digital identity, enabling not one "identity Visa" but thousands of them, each tailored to the needs of different ecosystems.

Let's Stop Phoning Home

The No Phone Home movement challenges digital identity systems that silently report user activity back to central servers, advocating instead for privacy-preserving architectures. Built-in surveillance capabilities, even if unused, concentrate power and risk future misuse. Let's build digital identity systems that serve people, not institutions.

First Person Identity

Listening to Drummond Reed at VRM Day, I was struck by how “first person”—a term that resonates more intuitively than “self-sovereign”—captures the essence of empowering individuals to build digital relationships rooted in personal agency, without intermediaries.

Digital Identity and Access Control

Until we value freedom and independence in the digital world, we will yield up control of our digital lives to others who will act in their own interests, not ours.

SSI is the Key to Claiming Ownership in an AI-Enabled World

I've been trying to be intentional about using generative AI for more and more tasks in my life. For example, the image above is generated by DALL-E. I think generative AI is going to upend almost everything we do online, and I'm not alone. One of the places it will have the greatest impact is its use in personal agents, determining whether or not these agents enable people to lead effective online lives. Jamie Smith recently wrote a great article in Customer Futures about the kind of AI-enabled personal agents we should be building. As Jamie points out: "Digital

Digital Identity Podcasts

I've been invited to be on a few more podcasts to talk about my new book Learning Digital Identity from O'Reilly Media. That's one of the perks of writing a book. People like to talk about it. I always enjoy talking about identity and especially how it's so vital to the quality of our lives in the digital world, so I'm grateful these groups found time to speak with me. First, I had a great discussion about identity, IIW, and the book with Rich Sordahl of Anonyome Labs. I also had a good discussion with Joe Malenfant of Ping

Why Doesn't This Exist Already?

I've had a busy month. Something had to drop and it was regular updates here. Technological change is messy and hard to predict. Still we can look at the direction in which digital identity is evolving to get an idea what's coming—even if we can't predict the timing.

SSI Doesn't Mean Accounts Are Going Away

I saw a tweet that said (paraphrasing): "In the future people won't have accounts. The person (and their wallet) will be the account." While I appreciate the sentiment, I think reality is much more nuanced than that because identity management is about relationships, not identities (whatever those are). Supporting a relationship requires that we recognize, remember, and react to another party (person, business, or thing). In self-sovereign identity (SSI), the tools that support that are wallets and agents. For people, these will be personal. For a business or other organization they'll be enterprise wallets and agents. The primary difference

A Defacto National ID from ID.me

Last week, I reported ID.me’s claim that they were not doing 1:many facial recognition. Turns out that’s not true… Whether you are a fan of or hate the idea of a national ID, ID.me is on the path to become one. I don’t think having a private third party run the national ID system is a good idea.

The Generative Self-Sovereign Internet

The self-sovereign internet, a secure overlay on the internet, provides the same capacity to produce change by numerous, unaffiliated and uncoordinated actors as the internet itself. The generative nature of the self-sovereign internet is underpinned by the same kind of properties that make the internet what it is, promising a more secure and private, albeit no less useful, internet for tomorrow.

Relationships and Identity

We build digital identity systems to create and manage relationships—not identities. We need our digital relationships to have integrity and to be useful over a specified lifetime. Identity systems should provide relationship integrity and utility to participants for the appropriate length of time. Participants should be able to create relationships with whatever party will provide utility. SSI provides improved support for creating, managing, and using digital relationships.
