Late Breaking News Session

My presentation on LDDI was in the "Late Breaking News" session since we basically missed all the deadlines. There were some other interesting presentations in that session as well. Daniel Harris and Niel Harris (no relation) presented Kendra, a non-profit initiative to create an open market for digital goods. They presented Kendra Base, a tool for describing digital goods using meta-data. They describe it as "a semantic information publishing and querying system prototype." They also called it a "provocation," meaning that they're hoping someone can do it better--they're just exposing the ideas. The user shouldn't have to know RDF,

LDDI Replaces UDDI

Dave Linthicum says: With lack of interest in UDDI there seems to be a need for another directory standard to come up and take its place. From Will there Ever Be a Common Directory Standard? | By Dave LinthicumReferenced Mon Apr 24 2006 16:48:55 GMT-0600 (MDT) I propose LDDI, a system built using RESTful techniques and microformats that creates a human and machine readable directory for Web services.

LDDI: Microformats for SOA Registries

My student, Tom Warne, has been working on a project we call LDDI for the last 9 months or so. LDDI is short for Lightweight Description, Discovery, and Integration. LDDI is briefly described in the short paper LDDI: Microformats for SOA Registries. LDDI Usage Scenario(click to enlarge) LDDI uses microformats and HTTP to achieve a usable registry service for SOA. The idea is quite simple, but also fairly powerful since it makes a human readable Web site into a machine readable registry service. Because it's based on XHTML and HTTP, it is browser and search engine friendly. Tom has

Understanding UDDI

UDDI interactions with various SOA players(click to enlarge) As part of the SOA governance feature and Infravio X-Registry review that are going to be in InfoWorld in a few weeks, I'm trying to come up with a short (less than 200 words) sidebar and graphic on understanding UDDI. My first draft of a graphic is shown on the right. Here's text I'm thinking of including with it. Naturally, it has been simplified to meet space requirements. The question is "does this capture the spirit of UDDI and communicate useful information or does it confuse because of details left out?" Help

InfoWorld Articles

I've recently had a couple of articles in InfoWorld. The first was an analysis piece a few weeks ago regarding IBM's acquisition of Datapower. The second is a review of Systinet Registry 6.0. I found Registry to be a full-featured and mature registry offering. The review is in the same issue that contains Eric Knorr and Oliiver Rist's 10 Steps to SOA. Registries are step five. I agree with the assessment that registries of some kind are essential to production-level SOA deployments, even if I'm not sold on UDDI.
